Location: Novotel Aachen City
Hybrid event
This module offers newcomers and career changers a practical introduction to the world of nuclear technology and to the challenges of nuclear decommissioning and the management of radioactive residues. Participants acquire a basic understanding of nuclear physics, the nuclear fuel cycle and the key principles of radiation protection and radiation measurement. The module also provides insights into how research and power reactors work and into the technical and regulatory framework for waste treatment and disposal. From clearance through melting and incineration processes to final disposal, the most important waste management routes along the entire life cycle of nuclear facilities are presented in an accessible way. The module thus lays the professional foundation for a better understanding of nuclear technology and its application in decommissioning and waste management.

The aim of this seminar is to provide you with basic physical and technical knowledge so that you can gain a sound overview of fundamental topics such as reactor safety and radiation protection. The lecturers will use concrete explanations and examples to present the broad topic from its historical development to the current state of science and technology, so that you can gain an overview and orientation on the subject of nuclear technology. In addition to the principles of radiation protection, the handling of radioactive substances and the ionizing radiation emitted by these substances will be explained. The effects of reactor accidents and the INES scale are also part of the seminar. The basic seminar is designed in such a way that you will be able to focus on individual topics after the seminar.
